The youth outrun change, helm break-throughs, smash through walls and create new realities. Imagine a world united rather than divided? A world animated by young citizens of the world rather than cluttered by jaded mouthpieces?
Model United Nations (MUN) is one such activity where the young imagine and live the dream of helming global debates. Recently, the Delhi University chapter of the world’s largest student run organization- AIESEC, organized one such event and LEAD (MUN) 2011 simulated three councils on October 15 and 16, 2011 in collaboration with the Jaipuria Institute of Management.
Each council, addressed issues that have occupied global mindspace for decades. The questions raised were sensitive considering how polarised opinions are when self determination is mentioned in reference to Kosovo, Chechnya and Kashmir. The Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) also discussed the reconstruction and development of African countries scarred by years of conflict and the mock General Assembly debated humanitarian aid.
Each student delegate who attended MUN was assigned a country and acted as an ambassador, and debated his/her country’s interests while addressing the ultimate goal of international peace and security.
Asmita Prabhakar, Secretary General LEAD MUN 2011 and Vice President Communications and Information Management- AIESEC in Delhi University, said, “Ever since its inception in 1984, AIESEC in Delhi University has stood for youth leadership and social entrepreneurship. We endeavor to enrich lives by providing young persons with unique learning experiences. Through LEAD MUN 2011, we hope to foster a greater understanding of international concerns among students of Delhi University and thus enable them to formulate informed opinions about conflicts and dilemmas that plague the globe, taking the first step towards leadership.”
LEAD MUN 2011 also released a newsletter on both days of the conference, created wholly by students. The students just took over a month to organise the conference. AIESEC is on a roll, having already successfully delivered three major events in 2011; Discovering Hope, Udaan and Kick for a Cause and is now all set to present The HR Summit in November.
Watch this space for young, proactive initiatives committed to change.
