The Seduction of Lady Anne: Excerpts from William Shakespeare’s Richard III

Synopsis: Lady Anne is in mourning as her husband Edward and her father-in-law Henry VI have both been murdered by Richard III. The play opens with Lady Anne cursing Richard, even as he begins to woo her. She spits in his face as he continues to proclaim his love for her. Richard, the villain of the piece manages to seduce Anne after a majestic battle of wits and repartee ridden with sexual tension and subterfuge. The scene that begins with her mourning the death of her father-in-law ends with her agreeing to wear the murderer’s ring.
