Celebrated artist Brinda Miller’s work is like a glow-in-the-dark, iridescent thought. Not just any thought but one that is an universe unto itself. With layers of other thoughts. Each one textured uniquely. Each one speaking to us. Some thoughts merge softly together in sprays of mist. Others stand out like elements of Nature.
In her work, there is darkness and light, sudden outbursts of colour, gashes of divisive black and the harmony of cool and blazing tints, shapes colliding, geometry on fire, peace and passion, body and soul.
Her canvasses are like stained glass windows with light streaming through, animating each stroke, each smudge. Or like fields in autumn. Or like sun dappled skyscrapers. Or just planes and swathes of stimuli that make us want to see the world as she sees it. As full of vital possibilities. Bristling with energy. Her work takes us to the core of the impulse, the desire to create that in its purest from, is the most beautiful gift we as a race have.
Brinda’s recent show Paradigm Shift just concluded in Mumbai and the artist spoke to Unboxed Writers about the show and the process that makes her work so unique and vibrant.
Please share with us, the inception of the new series..
From a group of work, I chose the one I liked the most and took the rest forward from there. However I do like to change my style from the last show. It is important to evolve as an artist.
Do you think abstract art is the closest to the human psyche because it is subliminal?
Yes abstract art is closest to the psyche. Realistic art often imitates real life whereas abstract art, visual though it is, is a complete manifestation (of your thoughts).
How is the painting process like for you? Do you like the loneliness of the process or does your art derive a lot from human interaction?
I lead the busiest life!  I think my paintings are like me, busy, multi-layered and definitely inspired by my busy travel as well as my constant interaction with people and urban Mumbai! No room or time for loneliness! Thankfully!
What does art means to you personally, what does it do for you?
Art for me is equivalent to yoga and meditation… it calms me and relaxes me.
What are the predominant emotions that you feel while painting?
I am an impulsive painter and an impulsive person… not a deep planner and thinker… it is more important for me to enjoy my work than to please others. The more I think, the less spontaneous it is.
Any parting thoughts about Paradigm Shift?
Paradigm Shift, the title of my show stems from the fact that my work keeps evolving and changing.
